A test that will reinvent your holidays in France

We’ll wager you’ve never seen a car quite like the vehicle driven by James Richard-Fliniaux. It’s a cross between a buggy and a NASA lunar observation module, and James would love to be your driver-cum-guide-cum-vintner for the day! His special contraption will take you on a trip through the historic hillsides of the Aÿ-Champagne vineyard just 3 km from Epernay. “I fell for its fun appeal”, explains our chauffeur. “It’s a convertible and 100% electric. It’s completely open, so you’re within touching distance of nature and the vineyards.” And James has really scored a direct hit, because the added value is there for all to see: there’s no roof, no doors and no noise — just a whole load of fun. James is a diligent host with an infectious enthusiasm, even taking on the role of head waiter when it’s time for lunch. “If guests let me know in advance, I can add a big wicker trunk to the back with everything you need for wine tasting, as well as a folding table for a picnic” — and, yes, that sums James up to a tee.

In Hautvillers in the village of Dom Pérignon, ten minutes north of Epernay. Local food and champagne tasting, including assiette de Champardises in the form of tapas: beetroot mousse, two types of ham from Reims and the Ardennes, and macaroon with pink biscuits and raspberry jam. There is also a shop selling local products.

In Vrigny, 15 minutes from the centre of Reims, this bed and breakfast is also home to Roger Coulon champagne. There are five charming rooms, the decoration is modern and refined with designer furniture from the 1950s, and the walls are hung with portraits from the nineteenth century. A very fine establishment indeed.
